Thoughtfully Raised

Local Protein, Produce,
& Culinary Staples

Real food, good people*.

*Here’s what we mean

Each year we source products from 40-60 local farms, ranging in size from 5000 sq. feet to 120 acres. Most of our produce farms are within 50 miles of our St. Louis location, and all are within 175 miles.

Poultry + Eggs

This was our first endeavor, way back in 2010, and is still our bread and butter. We raise our chicken, turkey, and eggs on real, living, breathing pastures on small farms near sunny California, Missouri. Our Story

Our birds enjoy all-natural poultry chow (without antibiotics or hormones), and best of all—not just cage-free (which doesn’t mean much)—they’re free to forage for seeds, bugs. etc. to their hearts’ content.

Chicken and Turkey are available fresh or frozen and whole or by the cut, and also as sausages and ground. Their rich diet and freedom to roam results in poultry that tastes like it was meant to.

Pasture Raised Brown Eggs have rich, dark-orange yolks with significantly more flavor than your basic, mass-produced eggs, and are packed for food service and in retail cartons (“delightful dozens,”).

  • The original Mid-MO Buttonwood Farm troop!

Pork, Beef, Lamb

Since we started we’ve occasionally offered other proteins, but since the start of 2024, through our partnerships with other small, often family farms, we are beginning to offer beef, pork, and lamb, more consistently as farms have it available.

Nose-to-Tail Philosophy: We encourage our purveyors to embrace using multiple cuts from an animal. This helps our farms to “balance” their processing and storage. Farmers have no trouble selling premium cuts—it’s the cuts like short ribs, ground, coppa, chuck, bones, etc. that really help strike the needed balance and result in more of the premium cuts being available.

Our producers include:

  • D&M Farm—Very small family farm raising Duroc/Berkshire cross hogs and fed dairy whey

  • Patchwork Family Farms

  • Slagel Family Farm

Fresh Produce

We’ve always done “protein + produce,” but since 2024, through our merging with Eat Here STL, we’ve teamed up with LOTS more small farms, meaning we’ve got GOBS more variety on the list these days, especially during the growing season.

From unique heirloom tomatoes to the prized wild ramp, Buttonwood carries items that will bring some buzz to your menu.

Small, local farmers are often able to grow rarer, sometimes heirloom varieties, and because they’re local, they can be harvested a their peak ripeness, and only transported short distances, meaning more flavor and higher nutrition.

Our producers include:

  • Moon Girl Farm

  • Eilerman Farms

  • Charleston Powers Family Garden

  • Broom Orchard

  • DeMange Family Farm

Grains + Staples

This is another category we’re only freshly offering through Buttonwood Farm, though our Eat Here STL customers will recognize these highly regarded local grains, beans, and flours.

And though we’ve always had Missouri honey on the list, 2024 has added maple syrup, and occasional jams, and jellies as seasonally available too.

Our producers include:

  • Janie's Mill

  • Pure Ozark Honey

  • Funk's Grove

  • McKaskle Family Farm

  • Martin Farm

  • Severson Farms

Dairy

In 2023 we teamed up with a Hemme Brothers Cheese and were proud to offer their scrumptious cheeses (have you tried their Brother’s Keeper cheese?!). And we hope in the months and years to come add to our dairy offerings.

As always, thoughtfully raised on a small farms in Missouri.

Our producers include:

  • Hemme Brothers Creamery

  • Baetje Farms
